GERMAN SHEPHERD BREED INFORMATION

German Shepherd - Physical Appearance
Male dogs are generally around 63 centimeters in height whereas the females are only around 57 centimeters tall. Due to the size difference, the males weigh around 90-110 pounds and the females weigh roughly 70-85 pounds. The GSD is a large, muscular breed and has a thick, woolly undercoat and medium length straight or slightly wavy, harsh overcoat. The standard color of the German Shepherd is black and tan though any strong colorings are allowed. White German Shepherds are disqualified and lighter, liver or blue markings, are classed as serious faults.

German Shepherd - Breed Overview
The German Shepherd is one of the most loyal, intelligent and courageous breeds of dog around today. Well known for their ability to serve and protect, they make ideal working dogs as well as trusty, faithful companions. The German Shepherd breed was originally created to herd sheep and other livestock, but now because of their eagerness to please their owners, they make excellent police dogs, search and rescue dogs and also guard dogs.

German Shepherd - Breed Temperament
A well bred German Shepherd is calm, eager to please, has a confident manner and is a friendly dog. They fit well into family life and they can also become excellent search dogs. However, due to poor breeding practices a lot of German Shepherds have become classed as dangerous, aggressive and nervous. This isn’t the typical temperament of a German Shepherd however, and if you choose a responsible German Shepherd breeder you should end up with a dog with a good temperament.

German Shepherd - Breed History
The German Shepherd has been around since the late 19th and early 20th century. Originated by Captain Max Von Stephanitz, his main goal was to breed a multi purpose working dog. He started a club called Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhund (SV for short), which is basically translated as ‘Society for German Shepherds’. His dog, Hordand Von Grafarth was the first dog in the club and it was the prototype of the German Shepherds which followed it. Each and every dog that anybody wanted to breed within the society had to be able to prove its ability in tracking, obedience and protection. The breed got its chance to prove its ability during World War I when the dogs were used by the German, English and American armies and they proved their courage and stamina. They were used as guide dogs for any blind soldiers and everyone was impressed with the breed. At the end of the war an American soldier found two German Shepherd puppies without a mother. He took them home to America and one died due to pneumonia. The other came on in leaps and bounds and the love for the breed simply grew and the German GSD breeders were overwhelmed by the request for more puppies. Some refused to mass produce the puppies while others saw it as a golden opportunity to make as much money as possible. This brought many problems with the temperament of the breed and many ended up on the streets of America trying to fend for themselves. Then when World War II came, again they were used to help the soldiers and to aid the Red Cross. The bad breeding continued as the popularity for the breed once again flourished. Eventually the German Shepherd became widely known in England as well as America and Germany and today they are one of the most common breeds around.
